Through Temper you can work as a FreeFlexer in sectors such as hospitality, retail and logistics. Getting started is super easy! Register on the platform, build an attractive profile, respond to a few - or a lot of - interesting jobs and get started.

Apply for shifts

You do this online using the platform. The client will choose FreeFlexers, based on their skills and ratings. You can increase your chances of being chosen by responding to multiple shifts at once. In the case where an application for an overlapping shift has been accepted; your registration (for that overlapping shift) will automatically be withdrawn. You will receive an email from the client once you have been chosen, but you can also keep an eye on your application using our platform. Add Temper to your address book and keep an eye on your mailbox. Once you have completed your shift, you can review your hours online and voila. It's that simple.

Payment

You can choose how you want to be paid. Once your checkout has been approved, the platform will automatically produce your invoice and start the chosen payment process.

What is important to understand is that Temper is not your client and therefore not the party who will pay your invoices. All financial matters are handled by an independent finance company called Finqle. They will always be the ones who will make sure you get paid. To make it easy for you, we will send your invoice to the client after which you will then receive the payments from Finqle.

Taxes

As a FreeFlexer, you will be responsible to do and pay your own taxes. You can start applying to shifts and work freelance jobs without needing immediate registration at the taxman (HMRC). You are only required to register as a freelancer and file tax returns if you have earned more than £1,000 from self-employment in one tax year. If you did then registration is mandatory in the following tax year. In order to file tax returns for income out of self-employment, in other words Self Assessments, registration is needed. Registration will result in a unique tax reference number (UTR) being sent which you will need for your biannual tax returns.

Sole traders are obligated to pay income tax and National Insurance Contributions, but might also need to make payments on account, which are advance payments on the tax bill of the current tax year. VAT tax returns are only required if taxable turnover exceeded £85,000 over the last 12 months. Read about all the taxes you might be faced with in this article.
